Carolyne A. Akello is a medical doctor and epidemiologist with more than 15 years of experience in HIV prevention research and programming. She currently serves as a National Resource Person with Uganda’s Ministry of Health PrEP Technical Working Group and is a Principal Investigator for the CUPID study under the Makerere University–Johns Hopkins University (MU-JHU) Research Collaboration.

Carolyne previously led the USAID-funded MOSAIC project in Uganda, where she oversaw efforts to introduce and scale new biomedical HIV prevention options for adolescent girls and young women. She also served as Principal Investigator of the CATALYST study, a global implementation science initiative focused on expanding PrEP choice and access.

Her research background includes leadership roles in multiple studies under the Microbicide Trials Network (MTN) and HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), including the MTN-034/REACH study. 

She holds a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and is passionate about translating biomedical innovations—such as injectable cabotegravir, lenacapavir, and the dapivirine vaginal ring—into meaningful health impact.
